In the height of summer, these millstones along Stanage Edge are totally obscured by lush green ferns. Now autumn has arrived and the ferns have died back to reveal their gorgeous russet tones, they also reveal the stones themselves.
I’m so happy I actually managed to capture this photograph. My original plan was to visit this particular grouping of millstones in golden hour light, then venture up to the edge in time for sunset. That never worked out. I just couldn’t settle on a good composition with these stones, I must have moved positions half a dozen times until I was happy with my test shot. At this point, just I was setting up my camera for an automatic exposure bracketing image, the sun disappears behind a low bank of cloud. I thought my chance had gone.
Looking at the skyline made me realise that the quickly setting sun just might poke through the cloud before it set completely. Minutes later my patience was rewarded. Sunlight flooded the millstones and the surrounding ferns in a stunningly warm, red glow. Isn’t autumn beautiful?
